The Grand Canyon as a Creationist Clock By Ryan McGillivray When asked to imagine the biggest, deepest, longest canyon one can imagine, an image of the Grand Canyon will often pop into a person’s mind. The Grand Canyon is a site of almost unfathomable grandeur, which inspires awe in anyone who sees it. Lately, however, the canyon has also inspired controversy, specifically over its origins. It is generally held by the scientific community that the Grand Canyon formed by the slow erosion of the Colorado River over millions of years. Steve Austin, however, has proposed an entirely different theory on the age and formation of the canyon and wrote a book explaining his theories titled Grand Canyon: Austin believes that the canyon was formed extremely rapidly during the period immediately following the global flood of Noah in the biblical book of Genesis. Austin proposed that the canyon is thousands, not millions of years old. This fits into the larger field of Creation Science, in which people try to prove with scientific evidence that the world is only 6, years old.

New evidence suggests the western Grand Canyon was cut to within 70 percent of its current depth long before the Colorado River existed. It is the result of constant erosion by the Colorado River over millions of years. Where is the Grand Canyon? The South Rim has an airport and rail service and is also close to many transportation hubs and the Arizona cities of William and Flagstaff, as well as Las Vegas, Nev. The North Rim is located closer to Utah and has stunning views, but is not nearly as accessible as the South Rim. While only 10 miles 16 kilometers separate the two rims if you could walk across the canyon, it is only reachable by hikers who tackle the 21 miles The North Rim is often closed during inclement weather as the roads quickly become dangerous.

Northern Arizona leaders push for uranium mining near the Grand Canyon
For Immediate Release, April 8, Contact: The Havasupai tribe and a coalition of conservation groups had challenged the U. At stake are tribal cultural values, wildlife and endangered species, and the risk of toxic uranium mining waste contaminating the aquifers and streams that sustain the Grand Canyon and Colorado River. The Havasupai Tribal Council will meet this week to talk about appealing this ruling.
The Havasupai tribe and conservation groups argued that the Forest Service violated the National Historic Preservation Act by failing to consult with tribes to determine how the adverse impacts of the Canyon Mine on Red Butte could be avoided or mitigated prior to approving mining.

At the time that Darwin’s On the Origin of Species was published, the earth was “scientifically” determined to be million years old. By , it was found to be 1. In , science firmly established that the earth was 3. Finally in , it was discovered that the earth is “really” 4. In these early studies the order of sedimentary rocks and structures were used to date geologic time periods and events in a relative way.
At first, the use of “key” diagnostic fossils was used to compare different areas of the geologic column. Although there were attempts to make relative age estimates, no direct dating method was available until the twentieth century. However, before this time some very popular indirect methods were available. For example, Lord Kelvin had estimated the ages of both the Earth and the Sun based on cooling rates.
The answer of 25 million years deduced by Kelvin was not received favorably by geologists. Both the physical geologists and paleontologists could point to evidence that much more time was needed to produce what they saw in the stratigraphic and fossil records. As one answer to his critics, Kelvin produced a completely independent estimate — this time for the age of the Sun. His result was in close agreement with his estimate of the age of the earth.

Before the Grand Canyon Dating Project began, in his Impact article, Austin admitted in print that the selected lava flows fell into two different stratigraphic stages. That is, the very information which he used to select the flows, also clearly indicates that they did not all occur at the same time.

Idealized and simplified diagram of the Grand Canyon There are a number of lava flows on the plateau that the canyon is cut into yellow in Figure 1, above. These lava flows are Cenozoic in age, and some of them spill into the canyon. The walls of the canyon are mostly cut into horizontal rock layers of Paleozoic age green in Figure 1, above. There is an angular unconformity at the bottom of the Paleozoic layers.
An angular unconformity is the result of tilting and eroding of the lower layers before the upper ones are deposited. These tilted and eroded layers are Precambrian in age blue in Figure 1, above.
The RATE team was assembled to test different rock samples, many from Grand Canyon with radiometric dating methods. To summarize their vast amounts of data and calculations, the RATE team concluded that radiometric dating proved to be unreliable as a clock to date rocks (Austin ).
Listen to this page About this Collection This collection documents the history, cultural aspects and geological formations of areas that eventually became National Parks. The collection consists of approximately maps dating from the 17th century to the present, reflecting early mapping of the areas that would become four National Parks, as well as the parks themselves.
Production of this collection is being supported by a generous gift from The Rockefeller Foundation. Documenting the mapping of the national parks online is a project that has expanded through several stages. At the request of the U. Geological Survey, twenty-six maps of Yellowstone National Park were scanned to commemorate the park’s th anniversary. The items included were selected by Geological Survey staff, and they became one of the first cartographic collections made available as part of American Memory.
The criteria for choosing maps of three additional parks Acadia, Grand Canyon, and Great Smoky Mountains to join the Yellowstone collection in creating Mapping the National Parks included diversity of geography and topography and their popularity as travel destinations.

The Grand Canyon How it was made Although there is no known actual reason for how the Grand Canyon was formed, the most educated hypothesis is erosion which would, of course, require an extensive period of time to cause such an enormous hole. Here is an actual picture of the Grand Canyon with the names of the layers pointed out. Radioactive age dating has been used to scientifically determine the age of these layers.
Kaibab Limestone — Approximately million years. Thin layers of sandstone or shale sometimes appear. Color is usually creamish to grayish-white. Toroweap Formation — Approximately million years. Same rocks as Kaibab Limestone only with slightly darker coloring. Coconino Sandstone — Approximately million years.
